This course will revisit the ethics and standards that govern reporting, while also giving students who have taken Journalism: What It Is and Why It Matters a chance to deepen their understanding of journalistic practices and apply their learning to new assignments. In particular, media literacy and reporting skills from semester one will be reinforced and expanded upon, and there will also be greater flexibility for the students to dictate their readings and assignments. Students will also explore constitutional and ethical questions of free speech, including a historical look at freedom of the press in the United States and the state of journalism around the world today. While new topics of discussion will be introduced this semester, the focus will still be on student production of work in a variety of formats. All students will create a portfolio by the end of the course and are encouraged to publish their work on the school news site.

Students who wish to take this course for Advanced credit will be required to complete additional work for their final portfolios in addition to submitting one article per marking period to the school news site, The Advocate.
