We are exposed to an incredible array of media each day. But what sets journalism apart? In this class, students will learn about the ethics and standards that govern journalistic reporting. Students will also consider the role that journalism plays in our society. The main focus will be to provide students with the tools and opportunity to practice writing journalistically, honing research and investigation skills, conducting interviews, and completing a variety of assignments about topics of their choosing. The class will explore photojournalism and video and podcast creation. Students will leave the class with a portfolio of completed multimedia work, an appreciation for the significance of journalism in society, and a more informed approach to consuming all types of media. Students are encouraged to continue their study in Journalism: Under Pressure Around the World, but it is not required.

Students who wish to take this course for Advanced credit will be required to regularly submit work for publication to school news outlets and to generate a semester-long capstone project that includes a substantive portfolio of polished pieces.
